In the '90s, Byron Shire Council did something pretty unique. They sent staff around the world to study model villages, then designated a 5-hectare industrial site for what would become Habitat, our cleverly designed village where you can live, work and relax, all in one place.
Today, Habitat is the creative and commercial heart of Byron, with a thriving community. It's where locals catch up with friends, or have a meeting, and where visitors come to be pampered or buy something from local independent stores.
Over 20 years in the making, Habitat combines the best of old-school Byron with modern planning to solve local problems.
Through purposeful design we've helped address the regional housing shortage, lack of commercial space, and over reliance on tourism by creating a real mixed-use precinct with everything from essential worker housing to cafes to flexible workspaces.
We started Habitat with a decision that bucked conventional development wisdom. Instead of leading with residential, we committed to building the commercial precinct first, to address Byron's critical shortage of workspace, while cementing the village's identity as a true mixed-use destination.
Combining health and wellness, retail, and offices made Habitat unlike anywhere else in Byron.
Designed by award-winning architects, the development spans ground-floor retail and hospitality spaces and first-floor office suites, plus gyms and yoga studios, providing work/life balance for staff.
“ Combining health and wellness, retail, and offices made Habitat unlike anywhere else in Byron.”
With its community title, water-sensitive urban design, and careful staging, each phase of Habitat has responded to evolving local needs, slowly growing to form a village that's environmentally, economically, and socially resilient.
It's not revolutionary, just a development that puts community first, creating a little oasis within one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Featuring six articulated buildings connected by covered walkways around a central subtropical courtyard, it became the destination of choice for local and national brands since opening in late 2017.
The precinct also includes shared amenities like indoor and outdoor meeting rooms, and co-working spaces, all powered by hyperlocal solar energy with NBN fibre connectivity.
Located ten minutes from Byron's town centre, and a stroll from the beach, it's also across the road from Australia's first solar-powered train.
