In the chaotic aftermath of the 2022 floods, an unexpected issue was knowing which groups to support. With so many fundraising efforts popping off, it was often hard to know where money was going, what impact it was having, and who was in charge.

In response, our director Brandon Saul established the simple and transparent Flood Relief Fund through the Byron Community Centre, where he served as treasurer. And by partnering with the Northern Rivers Community Foundation and using a registered charity with DGR status, the fund gave people a clear and credible way to donate.

“Together, they distributed $964,000 in quick-response grants to 106 local organisations.

Together, they distributed $964,000 in quick-response grants to 106 local organisations working on the ground, from housing and mental health to wildlife rescue and community hubs.

Focused on structure and speed, Brandon helped create a fund that was driven by locals, accountable, and able to act in real time. It was emergency relief done right.
